April 22, 2006:
Libertarians Oppose Perry-Sharp Tax Plan
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Austin, TX - April 22, 2006 - The Libertarian Party of Texas (LPT) opposes the tax plan proposed by John Sharp's tax commission. The plan would create a new tax on Texas businesses.
"The last thing we need is a new tax," said LPT chair Patrick Dixon. "The Republican legislature may use the urgency of the Texas Supreme Court ruling as cover to raise taxes. Instead, real fiscal conservatives should reduce state spending."
"This is the same legislature that gave us a 19% budget increase over the last biennium," continued Dixon. "The new business tax might be small to start with, but we can all expect it to grow. And the cuts in property taxes will be all too temporary."
"The very fact that we have a huge $8 billion surplus proves that taxes are already too high. If this new tax passes, you can bet Libertarian candidates will use it to penalize Republicans at the polls this November," continued Dixon.
The LPT has 88 candidates for State Representative who will appear on the ballot in the November general election. The LPT expects to have about 170 candidates throughout Texas.
